If you’re a fan of Sci-Fi/Fantasy shows such as Supernatural, Buffy or Eureka, you’ll probably squee at the mere mention of Felicia Day. If you don’t know about her, keep reading.
First, let’s define the concept of geekiness because Felicia is a fine example of a geek girl with all the connotations and, sometimes, prejudices this word carries. Geek was slang to describe a person socially awkward and unpopular, intelligent but who doesn’t fit in. The word evolved to describe a person who has a lot of knowledge on a particular subject; including hobbies. It started as a kind of insult to become something most of us are proud to be defined by. Because who doesn’t feel an extreme passion for something? For music, literature, movies, TV shows, sports? We’re all geeks in a sense.
But (there’s always a “but”, isn’t it?) geekiness, for some reason, has always been associated with the male part of the population. Why? You may ask. Because geekiness has been all about science, technology, video games, comic books, science-fiction, computers ,which are subjects unfairly linked to men. Girls can and are interested in those things too. Geek girls do exist. Geek girls matter. And this is where Felicia enters.
Apart from being an actress, a comedian and a writer, Felicia Day is a self-declared geek and a fervent gamer. She’s a violinist, a ballet dancer and a mathematician. She wrote, produced and starred on the web series The Guild based completely on her video games obsession. The series earned her multiple awards.
She owns a Youtube channel named Geek & Sundry where she hosts several shows. One of them ,Vaginal Fantasy, is focused on paranormal and historical adventure books for women. She’s an habitual participant at the San Diego Comic Con and other conventions either for her works on the internet or on TV. Recently, at one of these conventions, she said that comic books, TV shows and games don’t have genre so women are as free as men to enjoy whatever catches their fancy.
Girl power is more alive than ever. Well, in this case, geek girl power!
